The Collingwood Football Club was first established in 1892 and has been active for almost 130 years.  The signature colors of the team are black and white, and the team has been nicknamed as the Magpies or “Pies.”

Collingwood joined the AFL, known as the VFL during that time, in 1897.  Since then, the team has won fifteen premierships. Their first victory was in 1902, while their latest win was in 2010.

Over the years, the team has been noteworthy present in each season. It is the only team to have played 44 VFL or AFL Grand Finals. These events can also be deducted to other records – such as the highest number of loses in grand finals (27) and having two draws.

Collingwood enjoys of a ton of popularity not only within the Australian borders, but also worldwide. Collingwood and Essendon are one of the most remarkable rivals of the AFL, and they’re the third team with the most premierships as Essendon and Carlton are both tied in the same number, sixteen.

Quick facts about the team                  

  • Collingwood enjoyed of an exceptional success between the 20s and 30s. In fact, they’re the only team to have won four premierships in succession – from 1927 to 1930. Moreover, they have won other two premierships consecutively in 1935-1936 and 1901 and 1902.
  • Their highest score was against St Kilda in 1980: 32.19 (211). On the other hand, their lowest score was 0.8 (8) in 1897 against South Melbourne in 1897.

Brief history of the team

The tm was officially formed on 1892, 12 February. They had their first game against Carlton in May of the same year; however, they earned their first premiership in 1896. The following year, Collingwood took part in the formation of the Victorian Football League along with other 7 teams.

Five years after the foundation of the VFL, Collingwood defeated Essendon and earned their first premiership in the recently-formed VFL in 1902.

Throughout the 10s decade, the team enjoyed a modest success as they won three premierships, the first in 1910, then in 1917 and lastly in 1919. However, their golden era started in the late 20s, specifically in 1927.

Collingwood has always been remembered as one of the most iconic teams of the VFL as they hold the record for the most consecutive premierships in the league, having won the seasons from 1927 to 1930. Although they weren’t able to extend this record, the 30s weren’t too bad either as they won for two years consecutively in 1935 and 1936.

However, despite they made it to the finals numerous times, the team wasn’t able to win another grand final until 1953. Then, the team had to with for another five years for their next win. It happened in 1958.

The team went through 32-year streak from 1958 to 1990, where they earned their fourteenth premiership by defeating  Essendon. Their score during this game was 13.11 (89). This was their first and last victory in the nineties, as the team went through twenty-year drought until they earned their fifteenth premiership in 2010, when they won against St Kilda during a rematch as the first game resulted in a draw.

In the Present

Collingwood has had an average performance in the present season. The club has lost two matches in previous rounds, and has accumulated a point percentage of 101.8. Their first loss was against the Western Bulldogs, while the second was against the Brisbane Lions. Their only win in the -21 season was against Carlton.

They’re paired up against Greater Western Sydney, game that will take place on Saturday 10 April.
