Super Rugby Predictions for Chiefs vs Reds

It is hard to imagine lightning striking twice, despite the Reds having a good record in Hamilton. They were the only team this season to beat the Chiefs.

Although the Reds are in poor form, they tend to do well against the Chiefs. So, while I predict a home win, I'm betting on the Reds to come within the 19-point handicap.

  • The Chiefs have won 13 of their last 14 games.
  • By 11 points, the Chiefs won Super Rugby.
  • The Reds have won four of their last six away matches against the Chiefs.
  • Earlier this season, the Reds beat the Chiefs 25-22.
  • Six of the Chiefs' last 10 matches against the Queensland Reds have ended in victory.

Form for Chiefs

In Super Rugby this season, the Chiefs have won 13 of their 14 round robin matches. What makes this match interesting is that they only lost at home to the Reds.

Hamilton-based Chiefs have beaten all comers this season and are clear favourites to win the title after winning their last three games with relative ease.

It's true that knockout games can have a funny effect on teams, and given what the Reds did a month ago, this might not be so straightforward.

News & Injuries for the Chiefs

The following subs were added: Bradley Slater, Ollie Norris, George Dyer, Naitoa Ah Kuoi, Samipeni Finau, Cortez Ratima, Josh Ioane, Daniel Rona.

Form of the Reds

It has been a strange season to date for the Reds. Despite qualifying for the playoffs, it will probably be seen as a disappointing season. Victory against the Chiefs, however, can quickly change that narrative.

Queensland amazingly beat the Chiefs 25-22 away from home a month ago. It was a huge upset, but the reds have lost their three matches since then.

Despite losing to the Blues, Highlanders, and finally Fijian Drua last weekend, the Reds remained in eighth place due to other results falling into place.

News & Injuries for the Reds

Peni Ravai, Matt Faessler, Sef Fa'agase, Angus Blyth, Ryan Smith, Seru Uru, Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson, Tate McDermott (c), Tom Lynagh, Josh Flook, James O'Connor, Filipo Daugunu, Suliasi Vunivalu, Jock Campbell.

The replacements for Richie Asiata are Dane Zander, Zane Nonggorr, Lopeti Faifua, Jake Upfield, Kalani Thomas, Lawson Creighton, Taj Annan.

My Super Rugby predictions

Despite my belief that the Chiefs will advance, the Reds are the bogey team for the table toppers. I can see the visitors getting within 19 points in this one.
