Details:

Rafael Nadal is one win from creating history and winning his 21st Grand Slam which will put him one trophy above Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on the all-time list.

Despite missing the second half of last season, Nadal showed up ready and determined to win in Melbourne. He didn’t dominate on his way to the finals but always had control in the matches and didn’t come close to losing.

The Spaniard is coming off a 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Matteo Berrettini in the semifinals. Nadal converted 73% of his first serves and hit 28 winners with only 19 unforced errors.

In the quarterfinals, Nadal was challenged by Dennis Shapovalov who took the game to the final set but there Nadal showed his toughness and won by 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3.

Previously, Nadal dropped only one set in the tournament against Karen Khachanov and defeated Marcos Giron, Yannik Hanfmann and Adrian Mannarino in straight sets.

Daniil Medvedev entered the tournament as the top contender to win the title and he still holds that epithet even though he had a tough road to the final match.

The Russian is coming off a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win in the semifinals against Stefanos Tsitsipas. The world No. 2 was excellent on his serve winning 86% of his first and 72% of his second serve.

Medvedev was two sets and a match-point down in the quarterfinals against Felix Auger-Aliassime but managed to get out of the hole and win by 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 in 4 hours and 42 minutes of play.

Previously, the 25-year-old defeated Henri Laaksonen, Nick Kirgyos, Botic Van De Zandschulp and Maxime Cressy.

Key facts

  • Rafael Nadal lead 3-1 in the previous matches against Medvedev
  • This is their second meeting in a Grand Slam final. Nadal won 3-2 at the 2019 US Open final
  • Nadal is ranked at No. 5, Medvedev is No. 2

This will probably be a match to remember at the Australian Open final. Rafael Nadal is on the edge of making history and go on top as the player who has won the most Grand Slam titles. On the other side of the net will be Daniil Medvedev the leader of the upcoming generation who will probably dominate when the top three players retire. But if Medvedev wins on Sunday that will be his second major in a row and will prove that his time has already arrived. He stands good chances against Nadal who he defeated in their last encounter. Medvedev served perfectly in the quarterfinals and will need a similar performance against Nadal. He will have to try to finish the points early to have an advantage over Nadal who is better in longer exchanges. Medvedev is currently on top of his game and if he stays calm under pressure, he will win this one. Our prediction is Daniil Medvedev winning in four sets.
