Details:

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has announced his retirement after the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo. He has been on the tour for almost 2 decades winning 18 titles with a 66.5% winning record and earning more than $22 million. He made it to the Australian Open Final once in 2008 which is his only Grand Slam Final.

Tsonga has not been very active in recent years playing only 20 matches in the last three years.

The former world no. 5 is currently ranked 220 in the ATP rankings.

This season, Tsonga played 9 matches winning only three of those against Gilles Simon, Kacper Zuk and Marc-Andrea Huesler.

Tsonga is coming off a first-round loss at the ATP Miami tournament against Jordan Thompson by 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Marin Cilic is currently 23rd in the ATP standings with his best rankings at no. 3.

The Croat is 9-7 for the season and will play his first match on clay court in 2022.

Cilic is coming off a second-round loss to Carlos Alcaraz in Miami by 6-3, 6-4. In the first round of the tournament, he defeated Alexei Popyrin by 6-0, 6-3.

Previously, Cilic faced two first-round eliminations in Indian Wells against Miomir Kecmanovic and against Jiri Vesely in Dubai.

The former US Open champion had a good run at the Australian Open making into the fourth round where he was stopped by Felix Auger Aliassime in 5 sets.

Key facts

  • These two players have played 10 times before with Cilic leading the head-to-head by 6-4
  • Their last match was at the 2018 Davis Cup where Cilic won 6-3, 7-5, 6-4
  • During his prime, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was a regular at the ATP Monte Carlo where his best result came in 2013 and 2016 when he reached the semifinals
  • Cilic has played in Monte Carlo since 2006 and has made it to the quarterfinals in three consecutive appearances

After struggling with injuries for the past three years, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has decided to retire from professional tennis and the tournament in Monte Carlo will be his last one. Given his current form, the match against Marin Cilic today will probably be the last time we see Tsonga on the court. Tsonga and Cilic have played each other 10 times with the Croat winning 6 of those matches, including a 3-0 win in their last match in 2018. Cilic is in a competitive form unlike Tsonga and will win this one in straight sets.
