Details:

Yoshihito Nishioka is at his highest career rank at no. 33. The Japanese is 6-1 for the season and is coming off three consecutive straight set victories in the tournament.

First, he defeated Mikael Ymer 6-4, 6-2 and 7-5 in the first round and then went past Dalibor Svrcina 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the second. In the third round, the 27-year-old defeated Mackenzie McDonald by 7-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Nishioka has been playing in Melbourne since 2015 and this is the first time go this deep in the tournament.

Karen Khachanov is 20. in the ATP rankings with his career-best being at no. 8. The Russian is 6-2 in 2023.

He is coming off a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 win over Francis Tiafoe in the third round. Previously, the Russian defeated Jason Kubler 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and Bernabe Zapata Miralles 7-6, 6-2, 6-0.

In the previous four Australian Open tournaments, Khachanov was eliminated in the third round.

Key facts

  • Khachanov leads 3-1 against Nishioka
  • The last time these two played it was in Washington last year with Khachanov winning in two tie-breaks
  • Nishioka is 226-123 on hard and Khachanov 142-89

Nishioka is having an amazing tournament reaching the fourth round in Melbourne without losing a single set. The Japanese have an career opportunity to reach the quarterfinals but will have to defeat a player that has beaten him in 3 of 4 matches. Khachanov is the better one and more experienced. He is much taller and hits the ball harder. Where Nishioka is better is moving on the court. This will be a collision of two tennis styles and Khachanov will have much trouble despite being seen as a favorite. Khachanov is not consistent during the entire match and that is where Nishioka will seek his chance. Long story short, this will be a long match that may go in five-sets. However, placing a bet on over 35.5 games on 1.58 is a great deal.
