Details:

Rafael Nadal is not stopping his undefeated run since the start of the season and he is playing like in his prime. The Spaniard has yet to lose a match this season and he has already won two major tournaments for a 20-0 record in 2022.

Nadal is coming off a tough 2-1 victory over his fellow Spaniard and the best player under the age of 20, Carlos Alcaraz. The world no. 4 needed 3 hours and 12 minutes to go past the 18-year-old for 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

On his way to the Indian Wells final, Nadal defeated Nick Kyrgios in the quarterfinal after going past Rilley Opelka, Daniel Evans and Sebastian Korda.

After missing the last seven months of last season with a foot injury, Nadal returned to the court in great shape winning his second Australian Open trophy and a record 21st career Grand Slam. To make things even more sensational, Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final after being two sets down.

Following the Australian Open, Nadal went to Acapulco where he beat Medvedev again this time in the semifinals and then defeated Cameron Norrie in the final for his second trophy this season.

Taylor Fritz is heading to the biggest match of his career when he faces Rafael Nadal in his first ATP Masters series final.

The 24-year-old is coming off an amazing performance in the semifinal defeating Andrey Rublev by 7-5 and 6-4.

Fritz is currently 20th on the ATP list with his highest ranking being at no. 16 which makes him the highest-ranked American player at the moment.

Fritz is 13-4 for the season including 11-3 on hard surface. He had a tough road to the semifinal match in Indian Wells going to the final set in the last three games. Previously in the tournament, he won 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 against Miomir Kecmanovic in the quarterfinal match. In the previous rounds, Fritz defeated Alex De Minaur in the decisive tie-break, Jaume Munar in second and Kamil Majczarak in the first round.

Earlier this year, Fritz surprisingly lost in the second round in Acapulco against Yoshihito Nakashima after defeating Adrian Mannarino.

At the Australian Open, Fritz made it to the fourth round where he was stopped by Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets.

Key facts

  • These two players have played only once before with Rafael Nadal winning 6-3 and 6-2 in Acapulco in 2020
  • This is a chance for Nadal to win his fourth trophy in Indian Wells after winning in 2007, 2009 and 2013
  • This is Fritz’s seventh appearance in Indian Wells and first final

The quality and experience are on Nadal’s side but the real question is if Nadal can fully recover after playing more than 3 hours in only 24 hours and be at 100% for the final match. Nadal has done that many times but he is now almost 36 years old and the injuries have taken their toll on his body. Despite that, Nadal has always found a way to take advantage of a situation and set things to go his way, and that will be the case tonight as well. Fritz is playing well but most of his game is based on his first serve. Nadal will definitely win the majority of the long points and that will make the difference in this match. Fritz may keep his serve for a couple of games maybe even get to a tie-break but Nadal will take care of business in straight sets.
